Mother’s Morning Out
This community programme has provided a special opportunity for moms and toddlers in the Cowichan Valley every Tuesday during the school year for over 35 years. Moms appreciate the break from their daily child care routine, meeting new friends while enjoying guest speakers and other special events. Babysitting is provided by volunteer “grandmas” from our church family. The children have a ball, learning valuable social skills in a loving and nurturing environment. The volunteers recently received a “Champion for Children” award from the local “Success by Six” initiative in recognition of their efforts.
This special service to our community is provided on the second Sunday of each month, in Heritage Hall. Beginning at 5:00 pm, we offer a meal to those in need of support. We welcome a number of local organizations who regularly come along to assist, but are always looking for volunteers to peel potatoes, set up tables and chairs, serve the meal and clean up. Come out and join in this great opportunity to meet and reach out to others in our community.
Meals on the Ground
Through the efforts of many community organizations and groups of folks three meals are served each week to approximately 40 homeless guests. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 5pm you can find a hot meal in Burns Hall. Each group provides one meal per month and Duncan United donates the space and also provides one of the meals.
Not only has the Thrift Store been a great contributor financially to the church, but more important has been the outreach to the community. This energetic team of volunteers gathers to sort the donations on Monday mornings and staffs the shop on Fridays from 9:00am to 1:30 pm.
Duncan United has been the sponsor for the 3rd Duncan Group since 1957, providing Scouting experience for youth of all ages with Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, and Venturers.
Duncan United Church is a busy, busy place.
In keeping with our mission statement, one of the ways we carry out God’s work in the community is by hosting many non-profit and community support groups during the month. The following groups use our facility on a regular basis:
- Alcoholics Anonymous
- Alzheimers’ Support Group
- Family Caregiver’s Support Society
- Cowichan Citizen’s Coalition
- Cowichan Music Festival Society
- Parkinson’s Support Group
